| The
Amateur Wrestler discusses wrestling and the Olympics with six
time World Champion and 2004 medal hopeful Christine Nordhagen
from Calgary, Canada.
Q:
When did you start wrestling?
A:
1991
Q:
How did you get involved with wrestling?
A: I started at a University
of Alberta wrestling class while completing my Education Degree.
Q:
What do you like most about wrestling?
A: I enjoy the grappling aspect
most.
Q:
What are your goals/dreams (wrestling and in life)?
A:
My goal in wrestling is to learn as much about the sport as possible
and to compete to the best of my abilities. My goal in life is
to be happy and to appreciate the great thing that I have like
a loving husband, family and friends. I want to help others enjoy
their lives as well.
Q:
What are you doing to prepare for the Olympics in Athens?
A: I'm training like I usually
do and working hard at keeping everything in perspective.
Q:
How are you coping with additional media attention (Are you starting
to feel the added pressure)?
A: I'm trying to make it as
positive as possible because the media attention is great for
the sport of amateur wrestling. I like that I'm thought of as
a possible gold medal hopeful. It's easier to believe you can
accomplish something when others already believe you can do it.
Q:
What advice do you have for other female wrestlers?
A: Work hard, have fun and
enjoy all the great opportunities this sport has to offer.
Q:
2002 was a rough year for you due to injuries. Did the time off
change your view of the sport and your resolve to make it to Athens?
A: Coming back from injury
made me appreciate the sport more and not to take for granted
the great experiences I have had in the sport and the wonderful
life I have had so far.
Q:
Who are your role models?
A:
My role models are all around me. I have met and worked with so
many amazing people in the sport of wrestling. Each day is an
opportunity to learn from those around me. My husband Leigh is
an incredible person and there is no way I would be getting ready
for the Olympics right now if it wasn't for him.
Q:
Do you see yourself as a role model?
A: Because of the Olympic
and media attention I'm put in a position where I am a role model
for others. I will do my best to make good choices and approach
every aspect of my life with a positive attitude.
Q:
How has wrestling prepared you for life?
A:
By challenging myself daily through sport I have learned alot
of valuable lessons. I know that it's important to take risks
and not to be afraid to fail if you want to succeed in sport.
Also, your attitude is everything when it comes to whether or
not you will achieve your goals. These lessons transfer over into
everyday life.
Q:
Where do you see women's wrestling in 10 years?
A: In 10 years I see women's
wrestling being accepted in almost all countries in the world
and there will also be more women involved in coaching and other
leadership roles.
Q:
You're in a unique position to have your husband as a coach. What
advantages/disadvantages do you see as having your husband as
a coach and is he tougher on you than other athletes?
A: Its great because I trust
my coach and I know he is 110% supportive of me and my wrestling
goals. It has been more challenging at times when I'm having a
tough practice and I start to feel stressed and his job is to
keep pushing me through the workout. Sometimes I need him not
to be the coach and just a shoulder the lean (and at times cry)
on.
The
Amateur Wrestler and the community wish Christine all the best
in Athens. Go girl!
